Yerevan-Talin (Argatsotn region, Armenia)
October 11-12, 2024․

The Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography of the National Academy of sciences of Armenia, with the support of the All Armenian Foundation Financing Armenological Studies, invites you to participate in the 6th international conference in Epic studies. In 1873, Garegin Archimandrite Srvandztyants, the founder of the study of Armenian folklore and ethnography of the new time, wrote down the first version of the epic "Darеdevils of Sassoun" from the narrator Tarontsi Krpo in the village of Arnist in the Mush region (nowadays Turkey). This version was published in Constantinople the following year, in 1874, in the book «Grots and Brots: Davit of Sassoun or the Door of Mher». Thus, 150 years ago the beginning of academic study of the Armenian folk epic was laid.

The aim of the conference is tо study and popularize the following topics:

Folkloristic, cultural and historical-comparative study of the epic;
Mutual influence and interpenetration of epic and other genres of folklore;
Space of creation and dissemination of the epic;

Study of the heritage of Garegin Srvandztyants and other epic collectors;
Interrelations between epic and fiction;
Interrelations between epic and different kinds of art;
Impact of the epic on social life in the past and today.
