Conference: Funeral rite from ancient times to nowadays (Armenian Highlands and South Caucasus)

Mon, 05/14/2018 - 09:00 to Wed, 05/16/2018 - 18:00

Conference "Funeral rite from ancient times to nowadays (Armenian Highlands and South Caucasus)", 14-16 May, 2018, IAE, Yerevan, Armenia

Death is one of the most mysterious and inexplicable phenomena in our life: people have different and sometimes radically opposite ideas about what happens to us when we die. These ideas appear in funeral rituals, where one can witness beliefs, values, etc. typical to particular culture and society. Since the 19th century, representatives of various disciplines have studied death or funeral rites, they focused on cultural, phycological, social, historical, biological and other aspects of this ritual. A lot of books and articles have been written on this topic so far and at the end of the 20th century two interdisciplinary approaches (Death Studies and Ritual Studies) developed and enriched researches on funeral rituals.

Armenian scientific community has not done detailed and comprehensive studies of funerals yet. Of course, there are some studies in this area, however, many questions still needed to be answered. The conference aims to fill this gap and will try to answer some questions regarding death and funeral rituals.
